I thought a lot about how I want to sing the song. I naturally have a very bold voice with great projection. I'm a musical theatre kid so... loud and proud is kinda how we go.
However I think because the lyrics of this song are so emotionally raw and personal and deep, a real gentle vocal tone colour would suit.
Singing style inspiration
Dodie singing 'She'
... but really just any of Dodie's songs. She is a Q U E E N !
Maro and Jacob Collier singin 'Lua'
In both songs, they relax their voices and sing in a comfortable spot, consistent across the melody's range. I think I would value from learning from their singing style, particularly by relaxing my voice (rather than belting it out like a musical theatre song!). This week I've been practising Breathin', trying to sing relaxed and gentle. Comparing it to clarinet technique, I have complete diaphragm support and I am just letting the air flow out of me from the diaphragmatic support, with no pressure necessary. This has been a huge challenge for me! But I think I am definitely improving and getting closer. I doubt it will be close to perfect by the time James and I record, but I'll do the best I can by working on it until then :).
